Customized Forward Thrust Pad (Working Pad)

During steam turbine operation, the forward thrust pad (working pad) and reverse thrust pad (non-working pad) share similar structures but differ significantly in oil-film formation conditions and service characteristics. Understanding these differences is critical to preventing pad burning and ensuring operational safety.

Core Differences Between Forward and Reverse Thrust Pads
Load Characteristics

The forward thrust pad bears steady and continuous positive axial thrust for long-term service, acting as the main load-bearing surface. In contrast, the reverse thrust pad typically remains on standby and only bears transient short-term loads during unit start-up/shutdown, load rejection, or water hammer conditions.

Oil-Film Formation

As the forward pad operates under permanent load, its oil film must remain stable under all steady-state operating conditions, requiring stringent specifications for lube-oil flow, pad inclination angle, and thrust disc surface finish. The reverse pad remains unloaded most of the time, with oil film tending to break but with relatively controllable risks.

Thermal Load Management

Continuous frictional heat generation maintains the forward pad at higher temperatures with greater heat dissipation demands. Improper oil-wedge design or insufficient oil supply can readily cause overheating and melting of babbitt metal.

Engineering Solution

To address the challenges of high oil-film establishment requirements and potential instability in forward thrust pads, our steam turbine forward thrust pads guarantee stable oil-film formation from the source.

  • High-quality babbitt alloy on pad surface with precisely engineered oil wedge
  • Rapid establishment of stable oil film
  • Superior machining accuracy and qualified parallelism between pad surface and thrust disc
  • Properly designed thrust clearance to effectively avoid oil-film rupture and excessive pad temperature
  • Compatibility with various turbine unit requirements
